Through Any Weather: Finally Meeting Joan Jett

All of us have those idols we scribble down on our bucket lists to meet. Since I've been a kid two things have ruled my life: Star Wars and Rock n Roll. From a young age I took a hard mental note on who were my all time favorite rock stars and the ones I had to meet before I croaked. July 6th 2014 I was able to cross off my favorite rock and roll goddess....Joan Jett. One of the best things about working in music and with "music people" are the connections you build. I'm not talking business, but that too,  just connections (in the "hippie dippy" way). A few years ago as many of you know I started working with The Gits , which was without getting too cheesy here, life changing . About two Summers ago Steve (from the Gits) contacted me inviting me to a Joan Jett show. Long story short, due to traffic I arrived too late to the concert. I was like a sad kid watching the show end and the concert clear out. I missed the show and missed getting backst...

Turning old record sleeves into preserved guitar pick jewelry!

After years of collecting records I have a fair amount that are just the beat up sleeves I got in a bargain bin at just about anywhere. Instead of it just sitting on the shelf, I strategically cut them out with my Pick Punch and turned them into guitar pick pendants for earrings and tie clips! This is an awesome way to preserve the album art in a way you can utilize for fashion any day. Also as a music fan, it's exciting to create them and fun to sell them to other fans like myself. What I create some what depends on the materials I have...like these (above) for example were made from a somewhat beat up -cheap Queen album sleeve I found. The images behind them are left over pieces of the album. I try not to butcher ones in perfectly good shape, but beat up album sleeves I consider fair game. Now that I have figured out how to do this I'm going to do this with many more album sleeves and fliers. I'm about to open two new sections of my Etsy shop , one for these ne...

True Grrl Power: Talking music with Emily Jayne of The Fashion Slaves

The Fashion Slaves is a girl fronted punk rock band  birthed when Emily Jayne, the band's creator, broke her arm at an Iggy Pop concert. Her music is a delicious mix of energetic pop and creative rock with Gwen Stefani style vocals. Truth be told Emily has a lot of range and talent, previously singing and rocking out in the ska band The Uptones . But in her latest album "Go Insane" you can hear the ska and punk influence put perfectly together. Live TFS bring the rock and roll and that celebrated rock star presence. Shows begin with Emily tied up in a straight jacket, and as the show progresses she changes down to sparkly fashionable outfits.  The Fashion Slaves latest EP features a cover or re-vision of Chelsea the punk band's song "Your Toy" . After she was sexually harassed by a dickwad on BART with no help from BART staff , she was brave enough to come forward. Emily went to the local news to say "Hey, this isn't right!" On th...

Rock stars and P.E.T.A.

When I was entering Junior College I was really starting to live for myself and re-examine choices I had made up until that point. Junior College was my first taste of adulthood, which I was eager to begin. I was starting to question why I was such an animal lover AND ate meat. I felt like a hypocrite.  One day during a break between classes I stumbled across some pamphlets for P.E.T.A. I browsed through them and was appalled at what I saw. If you know P.E.T.A. you know the drill. They filled their printed work with pictures of sad looking animals being tortured or dying. Any feeling human being would be bothered by this. Just after seeing those pictures I decided to become a vegetarian .  I wish I still had the pamphlets, but inside they had lists and quotes by famous celebrities who endorsed P.E.T.A.  One of them was Pamela Anderson, which didn't impress me. But the list also mentioned Iggy Pop and the late Joey Ramone. I ...
