Pop Cult Discoveries

During my adolescence I discovered a lot of odd and interesting music and pop culture-related images and footage. Due to the magic of the internet, I was later able to Google them and see if anyone else had noticed the same things. Sure enough a lot of these have been discussed or explained online. This is an ongoing list of cool or strange things I have found in films, images, video games, and more. Discovery #1: Saddam Hussein makes cameo in Marx Brothers movie. I had just bought my last Marx Brothers DVD boxed set. I popped in my favorite Marx brothers movie of all time...Duck Soup. I was enjoying myself until the scene "Were going to war" came. Groucho announced that "Freedonia" was going to war. Every admiral got a chance to belt during the war song...my heart stopped when I saw what appeared to be Saddam Hussein. "Oh my god is that Saddam Hussein!?" I cried out. We skipped back immediately...and it wasn't Saddam himself but a clone. And i...

That's NOT Joey Ramone

Photos and footage that people have thought it was Joey Ramone, but is not .  Joey Ramone's brother Mickey Leigh is active on social media ( facebook ). Fairly often he seems to be answering questions  about him and Joey; largely ones looking for authentication of Joey photos.  Not Joey Ramone #1 This picture ^ is not of Joey Ramone but has been labeled and shared incorrectly as being a young photo of him. Here is the link to Mickey saying it's not a picture of Joey. Not Joey Ramone #2  I found this video while browsing through the message boards of Joeyramone.com. Holly crap! That looks JUST like Joey Ramone! I was sold that it was, until I read this: "Wow, it's a doppelganger!! If that's Joey, then who was that guy in the bed across from me in our bedroom? That is really weird. I had to look at that clip like 20 times, until I could freeze it on frames where I could see the glasses the guy was wearing , which were more squa...

Wont get fooled again: Photo-shopped Rock Photos

Since I began making websites I also began my journey on learning graphic programs to create images. In the beginning I had no money or much knowledge but I found my way before long. I started to learn Photoshop and finally went to school for graphic design in 2011. That solidified my knowledge and gave me affordable access to the programs I needed. One of my favorite things to do to pass the time is the listen to music and make graphics in Photoshop.   I rarely focus on things like changing existing photos. I do more of creating something entirely new. Over my time of using photoshop my eye became more keen on repeating patterns and inconsistencies. Although I learned a lot and came a long way...I have definitely been fooled.  "Bowie and Iggy" This one got me good. I guess when I saw this picture it just made sense and I believed it. Before long I was pointed out for being incorrect about this picture. Then I finally saw the original... __...

Ramones T-Shirt Meme

On the coat tails of all the One Direction t-shirt rip off nonsense I created a meme about Ramone shirts that ended up going viral. This graphic was the first one to teach me that well known lesson of "Don't read the comments." I read the comments, and actually did learn a little something from the mean comments. Photo by Becca Jones-Starr  The first issue many took with this meme was my line "The Ramones were the Godfathers of Punk." First of all, this line is completely subjective based on personal opinion. Everyone has a different idea on when punk started, where punk started and WHO started it. It all depends what you consider punk. I've been intrigued to annoyance by all the different points of view people have on the origins of punk rock. Overwhelmingly though, commenters noted that Iggy Pop was "the Godfather of punk."  The label of "godfather of punk" has been widely used for Joey for a while now. Don't shoot the ...

Rock Photo Credits & the Joey Punk Meme

As long as I've been into rock and roll I've been obsessed with viewing and accumulating photos of my favorite rock stars. With today's technology and the way things are shared and spread it makes it often times difficult to identify and credit the original photographer. As an artist myself, and as someone who has had their work used without permission, I empathize with fellow creators. I have a solid commitment to keeping in links and watermarks in images. I can't imagine purposefully taking them out or purposefully un-crediting the original artist. That's just something I wouldn't do. The golden rule, and all that.  With all honesty I have posted my share of un-credited photos, only because I didn't know or couldn't find who took the photograph. If I know, or once I find out, I will edit and share this information. As the internet gets more saturated it becomes harder and harder to know who did what. I'm just a regular rock artist and I've...

CBGB Movie review: New York's Gorgeous Garbage

After much ado, I have finally seen  CBGB Movie due to the convenience of Youtube. Thanks to the user who posted it! You can also check it out here . It wasn't available online otherwise as far as I could find, hence my taking so damn long to see it. I've been excited for the most part of the result of this film and I'm glad I finally found it.  The movie marks the journey of CBGB's founder Hilly Krystal. He picks the Bowery neighborhood in Manhattan to make his space because it's seedy and the cops just wont care. For the most part he's right. But before long bands like Television start showing up, playing an attracting the seedy punk element. This especially kicks in when the Dead Boys and Iggy Pop begin to play there.  Any punk fan is familiar with this story, and how CBGB's opened the door literally and figuratively for acts that "performed only original music." Although Hilly planned of open a venue for County and Blue Grass, he quickl...

Sitting here thinking of you: Joey Ramone Birthday Bash 2014

A couple of months ago I was sitting at the table with my friend talking and catching up. I was blue because I was going to miss another Joey Ramone birthday bash. I was so down about it I couldn't even listen to the Ramones. My friend seemed confused "Why can't you go?"  Hmmm, I guess there's a ton of excuses I could make...but I know I could make it happen if I really wanted to. That was that, it was time to return to New York. I had been quite a few times, so this visit I wanted to do things I haven't done yet. This trip I didn't get any souvenirs from a shop, but I got pictures and stories which is even better .  As soon as I started planning for the trip I was able to listen to the Ramones again. A huge weight was lifted.  I was no longer upset and was now excited...I had a lot to look forward to. I was going back to the culture rich, dirty, sticky fabulous New York. Woke up freakishly early to begin the tedious journey of getting to the airpor...
