We need to talk about this: The Foo Fighters are "AIDS denialists"

Preface: I am a fan of the Foo Fighters' music, so this isn't intended to be a hit piece. I genuinely feel troubled by what I'm about to share with you in this blog entry. I had no idea about this until just days ago.  Recently I saw a video that addressed celebrities with controversial beliefs. The one that stood out to me was Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters being "AIDS denialists" (which I didn't even know was a thing?) aka "HIV Truthers". I immediately had to look into this because it sounded just too crazy to be real (and you should ALWAYS be skeptical of things you hear and do. your. research.) An article that I felt was very thorough on the topic was " Foo Fighters, HIV Deniers " "Maggiore’s message has apparently penetrated the minds of at least some Foo aficionados. She says she has heard from many Foo fans since the show — one of whom, she says, now works at the Alive and Well office.  “AIDS is a toxic disease caused...

Bohemian Rhapsody hits all the right notes

This review will contain spoilers! Yes contrary to what I thought... there are spoilers!   Last night I finally saw the new Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" in a movie theater was almost completely full. The energy in the room was much like that of a live concert that was about to start as opposed to a movie screening. The movie opened with Live Aid, which is the bread in the sandwich of this story. It then went back in time to a young Farrokh Bulsara (Freddie's original name) developing his style and aesthetic. It also gave an intimate look into his family life and his dynamic with his parents, especially his father.  The story continues as newly named Freddie sees the band "Smile" perform; which contained 2 future members of Queen (Brian and Roger). At first the two guys assume Freddie is self-inflating about his ability to sing and brush him off. True to form, Freddie pauses and begins to belt out a song which takes the guys off guard...

Turning old record sleeves into preserved guitar pick jewelry!

After years of collecting records I have a fair amount that are just the beat up sleeves I got in a bargain bin at just about anywhere. Instead of it just sitting on the shelf, I strategically cut them out with my Pick Punch and turned them into guitar pick pendants for earrings and tie clips! This is an awesome way to preserve the album art in a way you can utilize for fashion any day. Also as a music fan, it's exciting to create them and fun to sell them to other fans like myself. What I create some what depends on the materials I have...like these (above) for example were made from a somewhat beat up -cheap Queen album sleeve I found. The images behind them are left over pieces of the album. I try not to butcher ones in perfectly good shape, but beat up album sleeves I consider fair game. Now that I have figured out how to do this I'm going to do this with many more album sleeves and fliers. I'm about to open two new sections of my Etsy shop , one for these ne...

Dynamite with a laser beam: Questions for The Killer Queens!

The Killer Queens  are an all female Queen tribute band. The lead singer "Frederica Mercury" wears accurate Freddie inspired outfits like the black and white checkered leotard. They all wear snazzy outfits and look like they just stepped out of the salon. The guitarist "Brianna May" has a guitar *just* like Brian's Red Special . They had a really great set list, hitting all the Queen songs everybody loves and the more obscure. These ladies bring it in every way, not only do they master the look but they have the musical talent to match. They are a real treat and simply can't be missed if you're a Queen fan. When I last saw their awesome show at The Night Light I wanted to stay and chat up with these cool chicks. Being an obvious Queen fan, I am thrilled to finally found a KILLER Queen tribute band in the area! Sadly, I had to go get the last bus home so I wasn't stranded out in Oakland. The Killer Queens do shows on a regular basis , with their...

Halloween Show with killer tribute bands!

Going to live shows is at the top of my "favorite things to do list." So it isn't hard to believe that you could find me at this show with a Queen cover band on Halloween Eve. VooDoo Dolly, a Siouxsie and the Banshees tribute band, started off the night. The singer was decked out in true Siouxsie style, she work all black with a corset and ribbons in her hair in voo doo doll fashion. The rest of the band was tight, I was especially impressed by the drummer who kicked out the beats like a pro on a Cheetoh colored glisteny drum set.  The Killer Queens were next, an all female Queen tribute band. The lead singer was wearing the black and white checkered leotard much like Freddie's. They were all wearing snazzy outfits and looked like they just stepped out of the salon. I ran to the front in my UK shirt, and sang all the lyrics to the songs. Incidentally that night all the bar tenders of The Night Light had the Freddie Mercury mustache and slicked back hair. One ...

Too much love will kill you: My report on Queen from 2004

Prologue I wrote this in the early part of college for my Music class. Thankfully, I'm a much better writer now! :D Too much love will kill you   “I have seen the future of pop music, and it is a band called Queen.” Queen exploded onto the British music scene in 1972 and held a successful career until their lead singer’s death in 1991. Their music has been described as “Rock served up with a sense of drama and high style.” Queen consists of Freddie Mercury on lead vocals, Brian May on guitar, John Deacon on bass, and Roger Taylor on drums. Queen was a revolutionary force, successfully recording rock, pop, jazz, funk, disco, rockabilly, dance music, and even crowd anthems. From the beginning, they pushed a flashy flamboyant persona. They even had custom made costumes to match their distinct sound. Queen took a different approach to live performances, working hard to establish a personal connection with the audience. Clearly, Queen was and still is a prominent band. T...

Rock and Roll Remixed, and re-hashed

Rock and roll's influence is still present today, and some of it can be found in the most unlikely places. Recently I was at a gay bar in the Castro with a good friend of mine. I was feeling low and really needing to get out. Even though I don't drink and bars aren't my scene, I was happy to be outside of the house. Immediately upon entry I notice the blaring electronic music. The kind where you have to hold your hand to the other persons ear and yell for them to hear it. Not conducive to talking, emphasis on the dancing. I don't really dance to music like that, so I was camped out at the bar. Wasn't really digging the tunes, cause let's face it...I'm a rock and roller. While I say I appreciate all music (which is true) my favorite has been established and I am biased. I suddenly paused, realizing I knew these lyrics. Pretty quick I figured out this was an electronic remix of Supertramp's "The Logical Song." Maybe it wasn't so much a...
