Dynamite with a laser beam: Questions for The Killer Queens!

The Killer Queens  are an all female Queen tribute band. The lead singer "Frederica Mercury" wears accurate Freddie inspired outfits like the black and white checkered leotard. They all wear snazzy outfits and look like they just stepped out of the salon. The guitarist "Brianna May" has a guitar *just* like Brian's Red Special . They had a really great set list, hitting all the Queen songs everybody loves and the more obscure. These ladies bring it in every way, not only do they master the look but they have the musical talent to match. They are a real treat and simply can't be missed if you're a Queen fan. When I last saw their awesome show at The Night Light I wanted to stay and chat up with these cool chicks. Being an obvious Queen fan, I am thrilled to finally found a KILLER Queen tribute band in the area! Sadly, I had to go get the last bus home so I wasn't stranded out in Oakland. The Killer Queens do shows on a regular basis , with their...

YOU are your own Prince Charming

We've all heard the well meaning words "The right one will come along" especially after a painful break up. I know these friends or family members are well meaning, but they are giving fuel to a crippling misconception. Especially if you're a female raised in the United States, you were raised with the Disney mind set that a Prince will come rescue you from your life. From the time you are a baby yourself you are given baby dolls to pretend mother and eventually a Wedding Day Barbie and Ken. Basically from birth, societal norms are saying get girls prepared for marriage and motherhood .  Even as a young girl I recall finding this disturbing. Quite frankly I wanted to build and play with girls AND boys toys. I often felt like I was being pressed like dough into a predetermined cookie mold, I fought against it (and rolled my eyes as I did). I felt like I was so much more than what my family thought I could be. I did however, feed into the Prince myth that I would o...

Drugs & Music

When I got into rock and roll in High School some of my classmates, teachers and even family members assumed I did drugs. I listened to classic rock, wore beads, tye dye shirts...but I didn't do any drugs. I found that to be a funny stereotype "because I like rock and roll I must also do drugs." I understood the whole "sex, drugs & rock n roll" thing, but rock and roll was my drug. In High School I was (like every teenager) going through tough times. I had plenty of opportunities to smoke pot, drink or do other drugs...but I simply wasn't interested. Rock and roll did all those things that I would imagine was like being on drugs.  I was calm, happy, relaxed, and taken to another place. When I was a teen I was pretty straight edge and just didn't have room in my life for trying drugs. My mother already assumed I was doing everything bad so I didn't want to give her any reasons to think I was a bad kid. I was definitely not a bad kid, I sat al...

The current state of Music

My main bone to pick with modern music is that I can't tell what's a joke and what's meant to be taken seriously. Just recently a friend pulled up "The Fox (What does the fox say?)" by Ylvis to gauge my opinion. I've been told I made some of the funniest disgruntled faces of utter confusion ever. Sure, something like that is a more obvious joke, but it is still an clear symptom of the current state of music. Again, it may be a joke song, but tons of people like it and are singing it like it's a real pop ear worm. I tend to encounter this mostly with rap music, having a friend play a music video or track for me to hear. For many years now I have had friends and strangers send me music thinking I might like it or at the very least be amused by it. Lots of people have sent me rap especially, hoping they can be the one to change mind about it.  I appreciate all music, but I have certain types I really like. I've been exposed to a lot of music and so...

The End of Zune

Let me start off by saying I am well aware I am one of the very few people who have and use a Microsoft Zune . That's why I think it's important to write this blog. I am a graphic designer and web developer, I grew up with computers, I know Mac, PC and more. But I make it pretty clear to those I know and work with that I strongly prefer Microsoft and PCs. More specifically I hate Apple . And even more than that, I believe when you buy a product you should do your research and buy what's best for you and not simply buy into the hype. That being said, I did my research when it came time to purchase an MP3 player. I first bought my Zune in 2005 and then an HD one 3 years later. I still use the Zune HD.  Sometime in the last year or so, I received a letter and read an article about the fact that Zune is ending and they wont be making the devices anymore. This was not fun news for me. Music is my life, and my MP3 player feels like my life support. I often begin to f...

Shady Music People

If I could go back in time and warn myself about certain kinds of shady music characters, it would have done me a lot of good. Of course in life I have also learned that sometimes you don't know until you know. I've had my website Bite-the-dust.com for over 10 years now, and was rock and roll obsessed building websites before that. As I've explained before, websites became my outlet for showing my love and dedication to music. Music was never just a casual thing to me. Much closer to something religious and life saving in nature.  I feel comfortable saying I have been "in the scene" for a safe and established 10 years. Although I am young, I am not new to the scene. In the past few years I have been fortunate enough to meet other people in the music industry who like what I'm about and believe in me. Doors open other doors, and before you know it you're inside the building. In all of the up and down emotions I've felt in life, no feeling has bee...

Adult Trick or Treating

Becca in a pet semetary inspired Joey Ramone costume!  I'm 28 years old, and I still trick or treat. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, as it embraced all of my favorite things...candy, costumes and excess. I never knew as a kid that Halloween would have a completely different type of dynamic. As an adult, trick or treating is essentially a night time block party. Being an adult you can chat with your neighbors in a way that you just couldn't as a kid. You can chill on their porch and drink a beer, and talk about things. Adults are also more likely to recognize your costume, and last night I crept around Berkeley in a Joey Ramone costume. It's a great way to get to know your neighbors in the most fun way.  I remember as I was starting to hit my teens, my family members saying I probably "couldn't get away with trick or treating anymore." This was disheartening to hear, and although I figured they were probably right I continued to trick or...
