UPDATED: Local Bands To Check Out

 My favorite pastime is going to concerts and shows and soaking up the music. I am lucky to live in an area that doesn't have any shortage of good music around. This page is dedicated to local San Francisco Bay Area bands I am watching and listening to.

 I will be updating this page regularly and if you have a local bay area band please email me at beccajs@gmail.com. While I know there are amazing up and coming bands all over the country I want to keep it simple by narrowing it down to the SF Bay Area in California.

Jack Cutter - "Jack Cutter performs and records solo acoustic steel string guitar played without accompaniment or vocals. The rich tones, woven at various times from folk, classical, Hawaiian slack key and more, at times evokes a contemplative feeling sometimes treading towards the mystical yet accessible. At other times his music presents blues, rock, country and bits of whatever springs out of the guitar from stompin' to soft. Jack currently performs regularly in and around the San Francisco, California Bay Area."


Wolves in Argyle
Wolves in Argyle - "Dark alternative rock band hailing from Oakland, CA.As veterans of the International Punk Rock underground for over 30+ years, they have been members of such amazing and cult movement bands such as The GITS, Oozzies, Naked Aggression, and Evil Stig (Joan Jett fronted). In the band: Dave Holmes, Steve Moriarty, Joe Garcia, Josh Phillips." 


Solar Maximum

The Ink Bats
The Ink Bats - "The Ink Bats are a post-punk/psych/goth-influenced band based in Oakland, California. Together, musically and energetically, The Ink Bats are an alchemic amalgamation of their diverse influences. In their songs you'll here their immense reverence for psychedelic/garage sounds of the 60's, such as the 13th Floor Elevators, Love, and The Folklords; their uninhibited enthusiasm for the unorthodox edginess of post-punk bands of the late 70's and early 80's, such as Wire and early Siouxsie and the Banshees; and their boundless affection for new wave, goth, and classic death rock, like Kate Bush, Killing Joke, and Love and Rockets."

The album art of Tommy by Mike McInnerney

 People often ask me what my favorite album is. Without much thought I am able to answer them. The Who's 1969 album "Tommy" is my favorite record of all time. The album artwork also happens to be my favorite. Recently I was thinking about the album and how it affected me in my life. I decided to look up the Tommy album art and was surprised that I was unable to find any of it. I could find the cover, but never all the album art inside. The Tommy CD comes with a booklet with lyrics and a series of different illustrations. But they weren't on the internet.   So this blog will be changing that! I just took out my CD booklet and scanned all the artwork. There are two versions of the cover, one featuring small images of their faces inserted into the gaps in the central sphere. David Bowie inspired Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has revealed that she modelled her quirky image on Brit rock legend David Bowie. The pop superstar said that when she was growing up, she would spend hours trying to recreate Bowie's own distinctive look. "I used to like sit in my apartment for hours and do his make-up on myself over and over again," she said, adding that she still collects anything to do with the rock legend. Gaga said, "What I have in common with David  Bowie and with Queen and with Prince and with Madonna is the way that I combine theatrics and the visual in all of my performance. The fashion and the imagery and what I am trying to say as an artist goes much further beyond the music". She continues, "I don't like when bands compare themselves to artists from the past and try to mimic them and their music and it sounds like a copycat. [REVISED] Eddie Vedder's voice, the most emulated voice in music history?

  Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder has one of the most distinct and emulated voices in contemporary rock music. I feel like I spent the entire 90's hearing alternative bands copying Eddie's singing style. Just to show you how many artists have been said to sound like Eddie Vedder throughout time; Creed's Scott Stapp, Fuel's Brett Scallions, The Stone Temple Pilot's Scott Weiland, The Calling's Alex Band, Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, Lifehouse's Jason Wade, and some say Nickelback's Chad Kroeger have a similar sounding voice (don't shoot the messenger). And probably more than I can remember.  When I continued to look into this stream of vocals that sounded the same, I came upon a quite obvious realization.
