Why I'm done with The Gits

My mind is still blown as to how things have went down over the past couple of months. Talking about this is still really upsetting for me but whether I like it or not I have to break my silence. A band I've worked with since 2012, The Gits and I have had to part ways...and disappointingly not on good terms. After this blog entry I intend to never talk about the Gits again.   As many of you might know I've been running the Gits fan site and online store for a long time. It mostly went smoothly apart of some trouble getting merch done (our official merch was screen printed). For example we'd be getting low on some shirt sizes and I'd email Steve to let him know. Since he handled the finances (totally understandable) he had to be the one to make an order. Therefore sometimes we'd have big gaps in between the orders being made and received. Naturally I did a lot of damage control but made my share of errors and learned a ton. In about 2016 the Gits started to fracture....

Re-launch of "GitsFans.com" Official Fan Site!

gitsfans.com The brand new Gits fan site has debuted! Go check it out!

What happened to the Gits site?

In November our Gits fan site (fans.thegits.com) went down. It took us a while to figure out what happened which was (long story short) Hostbaby getting bought out by Squarespace and is now on "Bandzoogle" a website for bands. I've been working hard building the new site at the new location. I've had to condense it down but everything will still be there. We lost a lot of stuff, such as images and most importantly our newsletter which had over 1,000 subs.  There have also been things going on behind the scenes besides technical difficulties. I wont go into too much detail because I don't think it's appropriate, but the remaining band members seem to have the dynamic of a divorced couple. They do their best to stay on the same page and get a long but it seems like they've all got different visions and ideas on what to do now. It seems like it's rare for them to agree. I'm not in the band so I obviously stay out of it. I can't help but fe...

Gits Site Changes

A couple of months ago the first of a few big changes with the Gits site happened. With the scheduling of the second Gits show came a new wave of energy, and creative lines began to get redrawn. When I first heard about the Gits it was clear that Steve was doing the lions share of the work when it came to keeping the torch lit that is the Gits. While I've always known the other members of the band as supportive, the air of separation was there...and it was thick.  The Gits website started out as an official website with everything Gits all from the band. In June part of the band wanted to make them as two separate entities; an official site and a fan site. How Steve explained it in the Gits newsletter : "The interactive site for fans and merch sales and current Gits communiques can be found on the first page, click on the icon FANSITE to visit us and see videos, go in depth into the visual and audio archives and communicate with us or webmaster, Becca and other friends...

Mia Zapata "Art, Rock, & Revolution" Bi-lingual Graphic Novel

A few nights ago (on Mia's birthday August 25th) some friends and I went to the project launch of a Gits and Mia Zapata graphic novel. This is something Steve has been working on for a couple of years and I even I knew very little about it. Thankfully now I know more! "Art, Rock, & Revolution" a Bi-lingual Graphic Novel about the tour adventures of the Gits, life stories with Mia and segments with Mia's ancestor Emiliano Zapata  a Mexican revolutionary.  Drawing of Emiliano Zapata by Pat Moriarity   At the event was the project's graphic artist Pat Moriarity , who is incredibly talented and has been in the business literally as long as I've been alive (31 years). Prints of Pat's work and Gits apparel were being sold side by side, along with these custom made drum heads that say "Art Rock Revolution Viva Zapata" Here is a description of the novel from Steve, "The primary aim is to reclaim the narrative of Mia's ...

The Gits Reunion Show!

The Gits performed their first show in 20+ years this December 4th 2015!  They performed with Visqueen singer Rachel Flotard for a Benefit For James Atkins. The show featured: Hammerbox (Carrie and Harris of Hammerbox) // The Gits feat. Rachel Flotard (Of Visqueen) // Selene Vigil (of 7 Year Bitch) // Alcohol Funnycar // Coffin Break, STAG // Gretta Harley at Chop Suey December 4th at 7:00PM. A second show was added for December 5th at 1:30PM. I wasn't able to make it to Seattle for what I know was an awesome show with cool bands! But I still wanted to put together the pictures, footage and more that I heard and received after the show happened.   Pictures from the show! "The only person for the job. And she out performed all expectations."  - Steve Moriarty  "Rachel, Matt, Andy and me on drums. The Gits resurrected for a friend. Thanks to everybody who sold it out and the other bands. Rachel was brilliant on vocals....

Let's get "Gitsploitation" straight

In early December I was messaged by Steve Moriarty of the Gits, who I work with, to give me a heads up. He let me know that NBC is wanting to make a mini documentary on Mia's murder. It appeared they were going ahead with it with or without The Gits knowledge or consent. This was certainly sour news.  Before long, Steve posted a message on Facebook (January 5th 2014): ”NBC’s True Crime in the Dark (or something equally as tasteless) series, recently filmed a re-enactment of the murder of our friend Mia Zapata. They used actors and canned music. I tried to have civil and logical conversations with the producers of the show, however, NBC did not think that using The Gits music or film footage of Mia playing live was worth paying customary and fair licensing fees as established by ASCAP, BMI and the recording Industry. There is nothing artistic, musical or positive about the re-telling of Mia’s brutal death. Nothing except a cheap way for NBC to sell ads for a younger, ...

The Gits website opened one year ago today!

On July 7th, 2012 I debuted unarguably the most important website I was ever hired to build. A lot of blood sweat and tears went into cultivating TheGits.com . Being a loyal music fan myself, and knowing what I like to see I worked really hard to develop the website. An important element was that I reached out to Gits fans to hear what'd they'd like to see. The band (Steve, Andy, Matt) also have seen the website and know about it in addition to Mia's family. That is also important to me. I have a lot of respect for music, punk, & The Gits, so did my best to create an archive of the band. Since the debut of The Gits site, Steve and I have continued working together. I have been running The Gits Online Store and sending out merch for probably about 9 months now. I think it's a blast, I feel like a rock and roll Santa but all year long. Steve has been an awesome person to work with and an unexpected but much appreciated mentor. As a kid I used to watch Unsolved ...

Bite-the-dust.com: 10 years later

16 year old Becca after my first Ringo Starr concert When I was a teenager, I remember feeling alone because I didn't have anyone to share my interests with. I had friends but we did not have many hobbies in common. I loved music, specifically classic rock. All the kids in my age group were listening to contemporary music: rap and hip hop. Even my own mom was listening to "new music." I distinctly remember her listening to Ja Rule and pop country. (To my mom's credit, she also liked a lot of good music). When I found music I liked I had to absorb every fact about it as soon as I could. I loved learning about the band, hearing all their albums, and just being so into it. It became my religion if you will, my passion, and also what gives me strength. I would have a hard day at school, return home to turn the music on. It stayed on until bed, sometimes after. I'm still that way. Right at this time my grandparents got a computer at their house. It had AOL d...

The Gits online store is now open!

The Gits online store As you may know, I was hired this summer to maintain The Gits official website which has been an awesome experience. Now we finally have the online store up and running, built by yours truly! I love learning new things and figuring out this store was a good experience for me. It feels good to take on something you've never done and conquer it. If you haven't listened to their music yet, I highly suggest it. If you dig them already, check out the store to see what we have put together!

Launch of "TheGits.com" Official site!

I'm a pretty skeptical person who doesn't believe in fate or karma. But even I have to admit that sometimes life takes me by surprise. It's funny when things come full circle, or seem like they were meant to happen. That's how I feel about this website. I was contacted last month by a man who needed a band website done. A band I admittedly never heard of until our conversation. Boy did I feel dense for not knowing who they are until now. The band is The Gits. And I put their name into Google and Youtube and did the typical 21st century routine research. Their story and music affected me in a way I wasn't expecting. The nice perk on working with bands...free swag!  I do a lot of band websites and typically they are not my cup of tea (for example I'm not too jazzed to do a rap artists site), sometimes it's just work. Having to make a thorough website on the band, I inadvertently became a fan...and what feels like an authority on th...
